The exhibit is co-sponsored by the UWM Libraries, the UWM School of
Education’s Center for Children’s Literature, and the university’s
Cultures and Communities program.
The exhibition gives visitors insights into how the artist/writer develops
a children's book from start to finish, as well as looking at Feiffer's
approach to a totally new audience. Among the pieces in the exhibit
are drafts, letters, proofs, cover paintings, and very early Feiffer
works like a Mother’s Day card for his mother and a birthday card
for his father. The idea for the UWM exhibit grew out of a trip Feiffer
made to UWM two years ago to honor a friend, children’s author
Florence Parry Heide. Feiffer and Heide collaborated on “Some
Things Are Scary.”
Of his new career as a children’s author, Feiffer says: “I
love it as much as anything I've ever done in my life.”
